Sofonie Dala’s Inspiring Volunteering Journey in the UK: Cultivating Nature, Community, and Purpose

The Art of Scything at St Nicks Environment Centre

It was a truly lovely Sunday for Sofonie Dala, a day filled with new faces, fresh air, and meaningful action. What began as a simple volunteer task blossomed into a beautiful blend of community connection, physical activity, and environmental care.

With gentle rain falling around her and the rhythm of traditional tools in hand, Sofonie not only worked for the good of the earth — she enjoyed a wholesome workout for herself too. Dancing with the motion of the scythe, she moved gracefully across the field, trimming away unwanted grass and helping restore balance to the landscape.

Returning once again to the lush green grounds of St Nicks, Sofonie explored the ancient and sustainable art of scything. Unlike loud strimmers or petrol-powered mowers, the scythe offers a gentle, eco-friendly alternative that protects the tranquillity of nature. This traditional tool cuts thoughtfully through long grass, nettles, brambles, and even young saplings — all while preserving the surrounding ecosystem.

For Sofonie, the experience was both a lesson in environmental stewardship and an energizing full-body workout. Each sweep of the blade contributed to a healthier habitat for local wildlife, proving that meaningful impact can come from simple, mindful actions. It’s a reminder that caring for nature doesn’t always require advanced technology — sometimes, it just takes a willing heart, a humble tool, and a little time.

Back on the green grounds of St Nicks, I learned the ancient, sustainable art of scything. This tool, unlike noisy strimmers or petrol mowers, respects nature while cutting through grass, nettles, brambles, and even young saplings. It was as much a workout as it was environmental stewardship — and it left the land thriving for local wildlife.
