A Royal Winter Holiday in London: Sofonie Dala’s Story

From Angola to Kensington palace : Sofonie Dala’s Winter Tale of History and Hope

Greetings to all, and a joyful welcome to each one of you! Let me take you on a special journey — a royal dream unfolding in the heart of London during the winter of 2025, through the eyes of an African girl from Angola, Sofonie Dala.

Sofonie spent most of her winter holiday living the vibrant spirit of the UK. On December 31st, she embarked on an exciting trip from the historic city of York to London, ready to welcome the New Year with the iconic London Eye lighting up the sky. She settled comfortably in a charming hotel in Westminster, perfectly located with direct bus routes to London’s main tourist attractions — a gateway to unforgettable adventures.

For two magical days, Sofonie explored the city, stepping into each new place with wonder and joy. Every moment felt like stepping into a royal world — not by crown or title, but through the powerful stories, memorials, and photographs that brought history to life. It was an experience filled with awe and inspiration.

One of her most treasured moments was visiting Kensington Palace during the enchanting time of “Victoria’s Childhood Christmas.” Before entering, she paused at the serene and peaceful Diana Memorial — a place so profoundly moving it felt as if she were standing among a real royal family. The quiet beauty of the memorial left an impression deeper than words, embodying compassion and grace.

At Kensington Palace, Sofonie immersed herself in the festive traditions of Queen Victoria’s youth from the 1830s. The palace came alive with intricate Regency-era decorations, Christmas trees adorned with handmade ornaments, and displays of gifts like satin dresses, silver brushes, and delicate dolls. The pop-up theatre brought to life the opera house visits of a young Victoria, while an audio guide invited younger visitors to explore the stories behind Christmas traditions we cherish today.

A Magical Playground Near Royal Walls

Right next to Kensington Palace, in the north‑western corner of Kensington Gardens, lies the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground — a place where childhood wonder takes centre stage. Inspired by Peter Pan, it features a beautiful wooden pirate ship surrounded by a sandy beach, rope bridges, slides, swings, tree‑houses, teepees, musical play sculptures and a sensory trail, all set in lush gardens.

Designed for children up to 12 and welcoming to those of all abilities, it’s not just a playground—it’s a kingdom of fun where imagination can roam free.

There’s also the Broad Walk Café nearby for a warm drink, spots to rest under trees, and the comforting feeling of being close to the history and calm of the palace grounds.

Though the palace closes its doors on Christmas Eve and the following days, Sofonie’s visit was a magical blend of history, culture, and festive joy — a family-friendly celebration of Christmas through the eyes of royalty from a bygone era.

Her journey wasn’t just a holiday; it was a dream coming true — a testament to how an African girl from Angola can find her place in the stories and dreams of the UK, a land rich with history and hope.

So here’s an invitation to all: Come and share in another royal dream. Discover the beauty, the stories, and the magic that London holds — because dreams, no matter where they begin, can blossom anywhere.

May this holiday spirit inspire you all to seek your own royal dreams, to travel, explore, and embrace the world’s wonders.

Happy New Year, and may your journey be as magical as Sofonie’s!
