Honoring the Creator through His Holy Day of Rest
A Reflection on the Sabbath and the Life of Charlie Kirk
Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
I, Sister Sofonie Dala, a missionary of Jesus Christ, am always humbled to follow in His footsteps. Just as our Saviour walked among the churches and taught on the Sabbath day (Luke 4:16), I too have been visiting churches in different regions and countries, encouraging believers to remain steadfast in faith.
The Sudden Death of Charlie Kirk
On September 10, 2025, the world was shaken by the tragic death of Charlie Kirk, the American conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA. He was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University, during his "American Comeback Tour." His death shocked both his followers and critics alike, leaving a generation of young people grieving and asking hard questions about faith, leadership, and eternity.
Though Charlie Kirk was not an Adventist, in his final months he began speaking more frequently about the Sabbath, God’s holy day of rest. His words carried an unusual depth and urgency, as though he was being drawn by the Holy Spirit to search for God’s truth more earnestly.
Charlie Kirk’s Inclination Toward the Sabbath
In several of his last recorded talks and clips, Charlie highlighted the importance of returning to God’s order: family, worship, morality, and rest. He reminded listeners that God established a rhythm of work and rest from creation itself, blessing the seventh day and setting it apart as holy (Genesis 2:2–3).
Although Charlie never openly declared himself a Seventh-day Adventist, many of us who watched closely sensed that he was being impressed by the Spirit to embrace the biblical Sabbath. His reflections on rest, obedience, and honoring God’s commandments revealed a soul searching for deeper truth.
It leaves us with the impression that, had his life not been cut short, he may have walked further down the narrow path, keeping the Sabbath in fullness of light.
My Missionary Journey
This past Sabbath—September 13, 2025, we concluded the Family and Home Prayer Week in Luanda. I visited the Central Church of Luanda and was overjoyed to see the Spirit moving powerfully among the congregation. The church choir of couples and lovers marched and sang joyfully, praising the Lord with voices united in harmony.
I was also glad to meet a dear prayer partner who is currently studying theology in the United States, preparing to strengthen the global church. This reminded me of the unity we share as God’s people worldwide — one body, one Spirit, one hope in Christ (Ephesians 4:4).
The Eternal Call of the Sabbath
As the world mourns figures like Charlie Kirk, let us remember that God’s call remains clear:
- The Sabbath is a sign between God and His people (Exodus 31:16–17).
- It is a day of blessing and holiness (Genesis 2:2–3).
- It is the day Jesus Himself kept (Luke 4:16).
- It is the day we will continue to worship in the new heavens and new earth (Isaiah 66:22–23).
🌿 Bible Verses on the Sabbath
- Genesis 2:2–3 – “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it…”
- Exodus 20:8–11 – “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy…”
- Exodus 31:16–17 – “Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant…”
- Isaiah 58:13–14 – “If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day… Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD…”
- Isaiah 66:22–23 – “And it shall come to pass… from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.”
- Ezekiel 20:12 – “Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.”
- Mark 2:27–28 – “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.”
- Luke 4:16 – “And He came to Nazareth… and, as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read.”
- Hebrews 4:9–10 – “There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.”
Conclusion
Charlie Kirk’s sudden death is a sobering reminder that life is but a vapor (James 4:14). Yet his late-in-life reflections on the Sabbath point to God’s relentless pursuit of every soul. The Lord of the Sabbath still calls us today: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
As missionaries, believers, and followers of Christ, let us hold fast to His truth, live by His commandments, and walk in the footsteps of our Saviour until the day He comes again.
