A Walk Through Wonder: Wellbeing Walks in York with the Ramblers
Walking with charm!
This week in the heart of historic York, something quietly wonderful unfolded — a Wellbeing Walk through the city centre, led by Ramblers Walking for Health and joined by vibrant community members, including dedicated student volunteer Sofonie Dala.
Every Wednesday at 2 PM, just outside the York Art Gallery in Exhibition Square, a group gathers to embark on a free, friendly, and accessible short walk — no more than 30 minutes, but rich in experience. These Ramblers Wellbeing Walks are a simple yet powerful way to boost physical health, mental clarity, and social connection.
Why walk? Because walking strengthens not only the body — improving heart health, lowering blood pressure, and boosting mood — but also the community. It fosters inclusivity, bridges generations, and deepens our connection to the places we live.
This initiative beautifully supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
-
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-beingPromotes physical activity, mental health, and social inclusion through accessible walks.
-
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and CommunitiesEncourages the use of public spaces and pedestrian-friendly practices, making cities healthier and more connected.
-
SDG 17: Partnerships for the GoalsThrough collaboration between local organizations like Ramblers, student volunteers, and communities, this walk represents the strength of partnerships in achieving global goals.
-
SDG 13: Climate ActionPromoting walking over motorized transport contributes to reducing carbon footprints, encouraging sustainable urban mobility.
Whether you're looking to stretch your legs, meet new people, or simply appreciate the charm of York, the Ramblers Wellbeing Walk offers a welcoming path forward. And for passionate student volunteers like Sofonie Dala, it's an opportunity to contribute to a healthier, more inclusive world — one step at a time.
