Empowering Change Through Sustainability: A Collective Journey Towards a Greener Future
Ladies and gentlemen,
Welcome to the Sustainability Week Conference!
I’m thrilled to have you here as we embark on a journey to inspire and engage millions around the globe in the pursuit of a sustainable future. Our motto, "Sustainable living is easy, cool, and fun," embodies the spirit of this event. Let’s dive into our three impactful sections for the conference.
1. Climate Fresk Workshop (Masterclass)
We kick off with the Climate Fresk Workshop, a transformative masterclass that I began in February. So far, 14 passionate individuals have participated, gaining valuable insights into the climate crisis and the actions we can take to combat it.
The Climate Fresk is an innovative educational tool that uses a collaborative approach to help people understand the science behind climate change. It’s designed to foster awareness, encourage dialogue, and inspire action.
Participants engage in a creative and interactive experience, where they piece together the causes and consequences of climate change, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of our environmental impact. By visiting our platform daily, many have discovered more about the Climate Fresk, and we hope to expand our reach even further during this sustainability week.
2. Seagrass “Seed Bombs” Workshop with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust
Next, we transition to an exciting Seagrass “Seed Bombs” Workshop that took place on March 4th. Partnering with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s marine restoration team, we engaged in a hands-on initiative to create seagrass seed bombs. This workshop was held in the environmental laboratory of a local higher education institution, where participants learned about the vital role seagrass plays in our ecosystems.
The seed bombs we crafted will soon be planted at Spurn National Nature Reserve, a crucial step in restoring seagrass meadows that support diverse marine life. Seagrass not only enhances biodiversity but also plays a significant role in combating climate change by sequestering carbon from our oceans. It was truly rewarding to be part of this initiative, contributing to the conservation of our marine environment while gaining insights into the importance of these underwater ecosystems.

3. Annual Student Sustainability Research Conference (SSRC25) at the University of Leeds
Lastly, I had the privilege of attending the Annual Student Sustainability Research Conference (SSRC25) at the University of Leeds on June 5th. As an independent sustainability reporter, I witnessed an impressive showcase of innovative research from students across Yorkshire addressing pressing sustainability issues. The event featured over 50 academic posters, highlighting the diverse scope of student-led research in various fields.
This gathering fostered interdisciplinary collaboration, allowing students from 12 member institutions of Yorkshire Universities to exchange ideas and insights. An unexpected connection flourished when I met a fellow Angolan PhD student while exploring the posters. To my delight, the poster I chose to report on was his work, and we quickly formed a friendship that enriched our conference experience. The event culminated in the recognition of outstanding presentations, including the “Rapid Emissions Award” won by my new friends for their exceptional research.
Together, these sections of our hybrid sustainability conference showcase the power of community, collaboration, and innovation in driving forward the sustainability agenda. Let’s continue to inspire change and make sustainable living accessible to everyone!
Uniting Global Goals and Local Initiatives in Our Journey Towards Sustainability
As we conclude our Sustainability Week Conference, it’s essential to reflect on how our collective efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each initiative we've highlighted today resonates with the core principles of these global goals, driving us toward a more sustainable future.
1. Climate Education and Action (Goal 13: Climate Action): Through the Climate Fresk Workshop, we empower individuals with knowledge about climate change, fostering informed action in their communities.
2. Life Below Water (Goal 14: Life Below Water): Our Seagrass “Seed Bombs” Workshop directly contributes to marine conservation, emphasizing the importance of protecting our oceans and restoring vital ecosystems.
3. Partnerships for the Goals (Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals): The Student Sustainability Research Conference exemplifies the power of collaboration across various institutions, encouraging interdisciplinary partnerships that amplify the impact of our sustainability efforts.
4. Quality Education (Goal 4: Quality Education): Our Climate Fresk Workshop and the Student Sustainability Research Conference emphasize the importance of education in fostering a deeper understanding of sustainability issues. By equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills they need, we empower them to become advocates for change in their communities.
5. Gender Equality (Goal 5: Gender Equality): It's crucial to recognize the role of women and girls in the sustainability movement. Promoting their participation in workshops and conferences not only enhances the diversity of perspectives but also ensures that future leaders in sustainability reflect a balanced representation. Encouraging women to engage in these initiatives fosters empowerment and drives innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
Together, these elements reinforce our commitment to creating an inclusive, educated, and empowered community that actively contributes to achieving the SDGs. By inspiring everyone to take part, especially women and girls, we strengthen our collective impact and pave the way for a sustainable future that benefits all.
Thank you for being a part of this important dialogue, and let’s continue to champion sustainability together!
Meeting new people and new environment
My Sustainability Week activities concluded with an inspiring session where 3 Chevening scholars were introduced to Climate Fresk cards. A total of 17 individuals were trained in person, and our goal is to increase awareness and understanding of climate issues. We also enjoyed a collaborative partnership with UK Forests, working together to preserve nature and promote sustainability.
Together, we are not merely participating in Sustainability Week; we are contributing to a global movement striving to meet ambitious goals by 2030.
Let’s continue to inspire one another, share our insights, and take tangible steps toward a more sustainable future. Remember, every small action matters. Together, we can turn sustainable living from a goal into a reality for all.
Thank you for being part of this transformative journey!
