Planting hedgerows and Woodland

Greetings everyone, my name is Sofonie Dala, a proud Chevening scholar studying in the UK. Welcome to another sustainability documentary, featuring my journey as a TCV volunteer.

On December 15, 2024, I found myself en route to Brier Lane new land in Shelby, reflecting on the stark contrast between our mission and the giants of the past—the coal power stations visible through the window. These towering structures symbolize a bygone era, where electricity was generated through the burning of coal, the dirtiest source of energy. The process is simple yet harmful: coal burns in a boiler, generating steam that spins a turbine to create electricity, only to be condensed back into water for reuse.

Yet, amidst this industrial backdrop stands Drax Power Station, a beacon of hope in the energy landscape. Drax provides 11% of the UK’s renewable power, showcasing a commitment to a cleaner future. By transitioning to biomass pellets, Drax has significantly reduced carbon emissions—by as much as 80% compared to traditional coal. This facility produces around 14 terawatt-hours of energy, enough to power five million homes, proving that change is possible.

Arriving at Brier Lane, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement and purpose. Volunteers of all ages—young and mature men and women—gathered together, united by a common goal: to plant hedgerows and woodland for a sustainable future. After a capacity training session, we dug deep into the earth, planting 400 new trees and shrubs that would provide habitats, improve biodiversity, and enhance our environment.

As we worked side by side, I felt a profound sense of pride in our collective efforts. Together, we are not just planting trees; we are sowing the seeds for a healthier planet, ensuring a greener world for today’s generation and those to come. This day at Brier Lane is a testament to the power of community and the positive impact we can have when we come together for a sustainable future.

In conclusion, our day at Brier Lane not only highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship but also aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By planting hedgerows and woodland, we actively contributed to SDG 15: Life on Land, which aims to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.

Moreover, our efforts support SDG 13: Climate Action, as reforestation plays a crucial role in combating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The community spirit and collaboration we witnessed reflect SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, emphasizing the importance of working together to achieve sustainability.

As we plant the seeds for a brighter, greener future, we embody the essence of these global goals, nurturing not just the land, but also the hope for generations to come. Let us continue to strive for a sustainable planet, one tree at a time.
