Greetings everyone!

I’m Sofonie's Dala, a Chevening scholar currently studying in the UK. Today, I want to share my inspiring experience volunteering with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) at Barlby Ponds.

Volunteering for a Sustainable Future: My Experience with The Conservation Volunteers

On October 29, 2024, I joined a dedicated team focused on constructing silk structures to enhance fish habitats. Our goal was to improve the aquatic environment, allowing fish to thrive and swim freely. Working collaboratively, we cut wood into manageable pieces and built the silk, all while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow volunteers.

After completing our main task, we took the opportunity to remove reed from the ponds. During this process, I discovered the remarkable potential of reed mace as a biofuel. This biomass can provide sustainable energy and serve as food for livestock, emphasizing the importance of utilizing natural resources responsibly.

By removing reed sustainably, we contribute to a circular economy, ensuring we don’t waste valuable materials but instead repurpose them for environmental benefit. This aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, and Goal 15: Life on Land.

Moreover, our efforts notably contribute to Goal 14: Life Below Water emphasizes the need to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources. Additionally, Goal 4: Quality Education underscores the importance of educating current and future generations about sustainability and environmental stewardship.

By engaging in hands-on activities and sharing our knowledge, we inspire others to appreciate and protect our aquatic ecosystems. Thank you for letting me share my journey with TCV and the vital role we can all play in fostering a sustainable future for our planet!
