A Wild Friday Adventure: Birdwatching and Conservation at Hull Road Park - My journey with TCV
Webisode Four: Conducting Bird Surveys
Cheerful greetings, everyone! My name is Sofonie Dala, a proud Chevening scholar in the UK, and I am thrilled to share my latest adventure as a TCV volunteer with you. Welcome to the fourth episode of our ongoing documentary on nature conservation!
Today, the sun peeked through the clouds as we gathered at Hull Road Park for our Wild Friday activities. The excitement in the air was palpable as we prepared to conduct bird surveys and take care of the beautiful garden. As I set up my binoculars, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for the wonders that awaited us in the treetops.
The day began with a warm welcome from our team, who explained our mission: to improve the park for wildlife by creating new nature homes, planting wildflowers, and conducting wildlife surveys. This family-friendly volunteering opportunity was a chance not only to give back to nature but also to connect with fellow volunteers from diverse backgrounds. It was heartening to see everyone come together, united by a common goal.
As we split into small groups, I found myself in the bird survey team, equipped with binoculars and enthusiasm. With every chirp and rustle, I felt like an explorer in the wild. We quietly observed the trees and listened intently for the sweet melodies of the birds. I was thrilled to spot a vibrant robin perched on a branch. Counting and identifying various species was not only educational but also invigorating!
In addition to our birdwatching, we took part in creating new habitats for our buzzing friends. Recently, our team had built an insect hotel and made bumblebee homes, while also sowing wildflower seeds to attract pollinators. It was so rewarding to know that our efforts were contributing to a healthier ecosystem.
After a few hours of engaging work, we took a well-deserved break at the Choose2cafe. Over delicious snacks and warm drinks, laughter filled the air as we shared stories and experiences. We even played a fun biodiversity game that tested our knowledge of local wildlife. To my surprise, I won first place and received a delightful prize: a box of chocolate orange! The sweet victory added an extra layer of joy to our day.
Once our break was over, we returned to the garden, reinvigorated and ready to tackle our tasks. The camaraderie among the volunteers made the work feel light and enjoyable. We planted more wildflowers, ensuring that Hull Road Park would flourish with color and life, all while continuing our bird surveys.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the park, I reflected on the impact of our efforts. Each Wild Friday is not just about the tasks we complete but about the connections we forge and the love we cultivate for our natural world.
Thank you for joining me on this journey as a TCV volunteer. Remember, every small action counts in the fight for conservation, and together we can make a difference.
See you next time!
Don’t miss the upcoming Webisode!
