Roots of Change: My TCV Journey at Seaton Carew

Planting Hedgerows

Webisode 3

Hurray! I’m thrilled to officially announce the launch of my brand-new documentary series, where I take you on an exciting journey as a TCV volunteer!

Hello everyone! My name is Sofonie Dala, and I’m a proud Chevening scholar here in the UK. In my free time, I find joy in caring for our planet by volunteering with amazing organizations, particularly as a volunteer with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV).

Today, I want to share my journey at the beautiful Seaton Carew. On this particular day, I joined fellow TCV volunteers to plant hedgerows in the picturesque area near the RSPB Saltholme reserve.

As I arrived at Seaton Common Nature Reserve, I was immediately struck by a giant platform that reminded me of those I used to see in the oil and gas industry. Surrounded by elegant transmission towers, I felt a mix of curiosity and awe. The ground around me was a vibrant green, dotted with serene ponds that reflected the sky. I couldn’t help but investigate further and soon realized that the platform was the Shell Brent Delta offshore oil rig.

Working alongside my fellow TCV volunteers was a truly enjoyable experience. We shared a common vision and aspiration—protecting our environment. There’s something wonderful about being part of a team that welcomes new faces, each friendly and passionate about making a difference.

After our planting activity, we took a refreshing walk by the sea. It was a perfect way to shake off the tiredness and connect with nature. As we strolled, we spotted other giant wind turbines gracefully standing on the horizon.

The work we do in planting trees and restoring natural habitats is not just about beautifying our surroundings; it is a vital step towards sustainability. Trees play a crucial role in combating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, enhancing biodiversity, and providing habitats for countless species.

Our efforts contribute to intergenerational justice, ensuring that future generations inherit a healthier planet. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 13: Climate Action, Goal 15: Life on Land, and Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Together, through our collective actions, we are planting the seeds of change for a sustainable future. Join us next time as we continue our journey to protect this beautiful planet with TCV.

Every small action counts, and together, we can make a big difference.

Thank you for listening to my story!

Conclusion

My journey with TCV at Seaton Carew was not just about planting hedgerows—it was a powerful reminder of how different industries, often seen as opposing forces, can work together for a sustainable future. Traditionally, the oil and gas industry has been linked to environmental degradation, while conservation efforts focus on restoration and protection. However, my experience near the Shell Brent Delta offshore oil rig, surrounded by both industrial structures and thriving green landscapes, highlighted the potential for collaboration between these sectors.

Volunteers like us play a crucial role in bridging this gap. By engaging in environmental restoration and scientific observation, we can help identify native plant species with potential as biofuels, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. With the right investment and research, biofuels derived from sustainable sources could offer a cleaner energy alternative while promoting biodiversity. This aligns with global sustainability efforts, particularly SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 15: Life on Land.

The synergy between conservation and industry is essential. By working together—restoring habitats, reducing carbon footprints, and exploring renewable energy sources—we can create an environmentally responsible future where both energy production and nature conservation thrive side by side.

Every small action counts, and through collaboration, we can turn challenges into opportunities for a greener world.
