A Day of Hands-On Work for a Greener Tomorrow

Hello, everyone! My name is Sofonie Dala, a proud Chevening Scholar from Angola, pursuing my MSc in Environmental Sustainability Education and Communication at the University of York. I’m honored to represent Angola as the only female Chevening Scholar from my country this year, joining a remarkable group dedicated to making a positive impact worldwide.

This year, as we celebrate the 41st anniversary of the Chevening Awards—a prestigious program that received over 60,000 applications globally—the Chevening team organized volunteer activities to honor this legacy. And on October 31st, 2024, I had the unique privilege of celebrating my birthday in a way that resonated deeply with my commitment to environmental sustainability: by participating in a team volunteering day at Kilburn Grange Park in London.

Kilburn Grange Park: A Legacy of Community and Nature

Kilburn Grange Park isn’t just a green space; it’s part of London’s heart, a place of community and nature. Yet, over time, invasive plants and general neglect have dimmed its natural beauty. Guided by our Program Officer, Ella King, and local partner, Mr. Ajay Kumbe, we joined forces as Chevening Scholars to follow in the footsteps of the Friends of Kilburn Grange Park, a dedicated group committed to restoring this park for everyone. Together, we helped clear weeds, pick up litter, and build insect habitats—a safe haven for biodiversity right in the middle of the city.

A Shared Vision for Environmental Sustainability

The highlight of the day? Planting a “Green Love Triangle”—a symbol of our hope for a greener future. This small, simple project, much like Chevening’s mission, symbolizes growth, sustainability, and lasting positive change. It was a chance for us to come together, working toward a common goal of making the park a better place for everyone.

With tools in hand—loppers, rakes, and hoes—we tackled ivy and overgrowth, breathing life back into this cherished green space. And what made this day truly special for me was its simplicity. My birthday had no balloons or pollutants, just a shared purpose to make a difference. It reminded me that change doesn’t have to be grand to matter; sustainability is often about small, thoughtful actions.

As I reflect on this day, I’m filled with gratitude. This was perhaps my most meaningful birthday yet—a celebration of purpose, surrounded by peers who share my passion.

So, I invite you to join us on this journey. Watch our story, meet the incredible people involved, and let’s work together to protect and cherish the green spaces that give life to our cities and our communities.

Through this documentary, I hope to share the inspiration of that day at Kilburn Grange Park—a day filled with learning, camaraderie, and a commitment to building a sustainable future.

End Notes: Aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

This experience reflects several key Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through our efforts in environmental restoration, SDG 13 (Climate Action) by promoting biodiversity, and importantly, SDG 5 (Gender Equality). As the only female Chevening Scholar from Angola this year, my presence here highlights the ongoing gender disparity in accessing higher education and competitive scholarships. Many young women lack the skills and resources to meet the rigorous requirements of prestigious programs like Chevening, underscoring the need for equitable opportunities and support to empower girls and women to reach their full potential.
