A Journey Through History and Light: My Unforgettable Visit to York Minster
Bridging Cultures: An African Scholar’s Encounter with York Minster’s Legacy
Hello, my name is Sofonie Dala, a proud Chevening Scholar pursuing my MSc in Environmental Sustainability Education and Communication at the University of York. Following a recommendation from my department, I made time during consolidation week to visit York Minster, one of the UK’s most significant and historical sites. The experience was incredible—especially as an Angolan student from Africa. To see in person what I had only read about in history books brought history alive in a powerful way.

York Minster isn’t just a cathedral; it’s a piece of history etched in stone. Inside York Minster, I was surrounded by centuries of rich history, with a particularly captivating sight being the line of 15 kings who ruled over centuries, carved into the architecture, each bearing witness to the history that has unfolded within these walls. The Minster is not only an architectural marvel but also a testament to the resilience and artistry that has withstood the test of time, making it an enduring landmark in the UK.
But that wasn’t all. I also attended York Minster’s Phoenix Show, an unforgettable display of light and sound celebrating resilience, hope, and rebirth.
From Stone to Light: Discovering the Rich History of York Minster: The Phoenix Show
For those interested in history, art, or resilience, York Minster offers an experience unlike any other. I’d love for you to join me in experiencing York Minster Aflame with Light, a captivating light and sound show celebrating the Minster’s journey of renewal after the devastating fire of 1984. This show, PHOENIX, beautifully narrates the Minster’s story of rebirth, resilience, and the courage of those who rebuilt it, while autumn’s golden hues bathe the structure in a magical light.

"York Minster isn’t just a cathedral; it’s a piece of history etched in stone. This magnificent building holds over a thousand years of stories, and inside, you can see the impressive statues of 15 English kings who ruled over centuries. As an African student from Angola, seeing these historical treasures up close, treasures I’d only read about in books, was absolutely incredible.”

“But that wasn’t all. I also attended York Minster’s Phoenix Show, an unforgettable display of light and sound celebrating resilience, hope, and rebirth. The show commemorates the courage of those who helped rebuild the cathedral after the devastating fire of 1984. Watching York Minster’s walls come alive with the story of lightning, fire, and the triumph of a city left me inspired and moved.”
[As the visuals fade into a stunning projection of York Minster bathed in glowing golds and reds, Sofonie concludes.]
“I invite everyone to come and experience this spectacular event with me. It aligns with many of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, such as Quality Education, by preserving history for future generations, and Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, as it celebrates a community’s resilience and unity. This is truly a sight you won’t want to miss.”
